When the temperatures start dropping, I immediately turn off the water to the outside faucets. However, in early winter, the temperatures bounce up and down and having easy access to water outside is nice. That's why I like this nifty little accessory. It prevents freeze damage down to around 0 F.It is carefully designed and manufactured, promising years of protection. In the recent freeze out outdoor taps froze multiple times. I got this for the faucet by the garage that has the least heat. This would be nice for automatically dripping the faucet, and if I understand right running even more water, to keep the pipe warm enough.Well-built. All-metal except seals. Goes on fine, compact, doesn't draw attention.I tried to test by putting in the freezer, then on the tap. It did let water through initially, then stopped. When warm it doesn't let any water through. I will need a real freeze to fully verify operation. In my test it seemed that the faucet should be barely turned on, as full pressure will lock the valve open even once it's warmed up.

This seems to be a good quality product with solid build construction. I installed it on an outdoor water line and it has kept the lines operating properly. To be fair, the nights have barely dipped below freezing on a few occasions since I installed this valve, so it hasn't had much of a test. We're going into summer now and I doubt this valve will really get put to the test until late fall, but so far it seems to be a well-built product.

This expansion valve is such a great idea. I've been using those foam covers over my faucets and while they do help somewhat, this device has a temperature activated valve that activates in cold weather which can help prevents freezing pipes from expansion. You do lose 1-2 gallons of water per hour during very cold temperatures but it's not a significant loss when you consider the cost of replacing damaged pipes.The best thing is how easy it is to install. You just screw it on where your hose normally goes and that's it. Removing it is also easy. It's still cold enough here that it gets below freezing overnight and I was able to test this valve. It works well and it will not leak when the temperature is over 35 or so. Great product.
